Understanding Insomnia: Why People Can’t Sleep
The challenges presented by coronavirus certainly qualify as the kind of stressor that is likely to lead to an increase in the incidence of acute insomnia. Research in behavioral sleep medicine suggests that while acute insomnia can be considered a normal reaction to stress, for many, the sleep problem can evolve into a chronic disorder that has wide ranging impact on both medical and behavioral health for years to come. In this lecture, Dr. Posner will show how acute insomnia can evolve from a normal stress reaction to a disorder necessitating targeted treatment, and how the practice of social distancing itself can increase the likelihood of this evolution. Finally, he will provide some ideas about how to possibly prevent this transition from occurring in the first place.
